Tuesday, August 10th, 2010

Mary Appears on the cover of September’s W Magazine with a group of Hollywood’s New It Girls. Unlike other generations of actresses, none of these eight women are living in the margins of men. They’re creating complex characters that are often at the center of the film.  Check out the images in the GALLERY. Full Scans coming soon

Mary Elizabeth Winstead
“I would love to know what it’s like to be blond, but every time I mention the possibility of going blond, people act like the world’s going to come to an end. I will say that having pink hair was really fun.” Winstead went pink (and blue and green and red) in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, which was released in August. A veteran of television, she was cast by Quentin Tarantino as a snappy, sexy actress in 2007’s Death Proof. “It was never explained why my character was in a cheerleader’s uniform for the entire film,” Winstead says. “But the outfit made it easy to get into character.”

Mary is a Beauty for the Geeks

Sunday, August 8th, 2010

The NY Post has a wonderful article about Mary in their Sunday edition.

“Ramona is a different kind of dream girl,” Winstead says. “She’s not your typical blonde hair, big boob, hair-flowing-in-slow-motion kind of girl.”

No, she’s the kind of girl who dyes her hair a different wild color every week and a half, wears combat boots and fingerless gloves, is aloof and has a sarcastic sense of humor.

“I couldn’t really put the pressure on myself to think that Ramona is physical perfection incarnate,” Winstead says. “There’s something about her, something that emanates from her that makes her attractive to people.

Mary is Under The Radar

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

Mary is featured in the latest issue of Under The Radar Magazine in which she discusses Scott Pilgrim vs The World and The Thing

Actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead is most certainly worth fighting over. Already a TV veteran by the time she was cast in such teen scream flicks asFinal Destination 3 and the 2006 remake of Black Christmas, Winstead had a breakthrough year in 2007, appearing as John McClane’s daughter-in-distress in Live Free or Die Hard and starring in Quentin Tarantino’s Grindhouse segment Death Proof. It was the latter performance that caught the attention of director Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz), who had contributed a faux trailer for the B-movie double-feature. In Wright’s upcoming Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, the anticipated film adaptation of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s acclaimed graphic novel series, Winstead plays Ramona Flowers, a girl with a lot of baggage when it comes to dating—seven exes that the story’s titular hero must fight against to win her heart. On a break from shooting scenes for the upcoming prequel to John Carpenter’s 1982 horror classic The Thing, Winstead spoke with Under the Radar about screaming and scary movies, evil exes, and what it’s like to work with Michael Cera and Edgar Wright. (Pick up our Summer 2010/Wasted on the Youth issue for an article in which Winstead talks about Labyrinth, one of her favorite films as a child. Also read an interview with Scott Pilgrim director Edgar Wright in the same issue.)

Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s Favorite Music

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

Mary is featured over at Spin Magazine discussing her favorite music!

The object of Michael Cera’s affection in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, on the soundtrack to her life. [Full Story]

What was the last concert you attended?
I went to see Bat for Lashes in Toronto. It was mesmerizing. [Scott Pilgrim director] Edgar Wright had sent me “What’s a Girl to Do?” and I became completely obsessed with the video of her on the bike with the boys in bunny costumes.

Which of your costars had the best taste in music?
Brie Larson and I connected over French pop. She was really into Brigitte Bardot and Serge Gainsbourg, and I had just discovered France Gall.

Who would you like to portray in a rock biopic?
Fiona Apple. I’m a singer and I’d like to do “Never Is a Promise.”

What’s the first album you bought with your own money?
Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill. When I was in fifth grade, I thought I was 17. I have memories of listening to “You Oughta Know” on the radio and knowing the “Are you thinking of me when you blank her?” part was coming up and trying to switch the station really fast. The embarrassment of hearing those words in the presence of your parents is the worst.

Name the band that comes after Radiohead on your iPod.
The Raincoats.

Who would we be surprised to learn is in your collection?
mewithoutYou. My boyfriend and I met on a cruise when we were 18 and bonded over their second album, especially “Nice and Blue, Pt. 2.” We’re getting married in October.

What song will you dance to at the wedding?
I’ve been shopping for music from the ’50s and ’60s, like the Shangri-Las, the Shirelles, and Roy Orbison. I really love Ben E. King, so I think one of the slow dances will be “Stand by Me.”

Name a song you listened to in the past 24 hours.
“Crystalised.” I thought I was the only one who knew about the xx, but they caught on so quickly I feel like I’m late getting on the bandwagon.

Who’s the most controversial artist that you’ve ever been a fan of?
Madonna. I was nine when her Erotica album came out, and my friends and I had a little group that we named “Erotica” even though we had no idea what it meant. We were like, “It’s pretty, it’s cool, it’s erotica.”

For a guy with a hook nose and body weight that can’t be more than a hundred pounds soaking wet, Michael Cera certainly has a way with the ladies. In “Youth in Revolt,” he romanced Rooney Mara, and he won over Martha MacIsaac in the 2007 hit “Superbad.” Enter Mary Elizabeth Winstead, the latest of Cera’s conquests, appearing in the much-hyped “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World,” in theaters August 13. Winstead plays Ramona, a self-reliant cynic with Manic-Panic pink hair whose seven evil ex-boyfriends unite to challenge her current beau, Scott Pilgrim (Cera), to a battle of superhero proportions. (Think light sabers, slo-mo backflips and “Batman and Robin”-esque “kapows!”) “Most guys wouldn’t stick around, but Scott does, and that’s really sweet,” says Winstead.

Surprisingly, the fanciful premise, based on an adult comic-book series by Bryan Lee O’Malley, wasn’t so far-fetched for the actress. “I can relate to that feeling of people making a big fuss over you for what seems like no reason at all,” Winstead says. “But I mean, I certainly haven’t had seven ex-boyfriends come after my boyfriend or anything like that.”

Here, WWD provides the vital stats on the girl over whom everyone’s fighting.

AGE:
25

PROVENANCE: Born in Rocky Mount, N.C. , and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah. (No, she’s not Mormon, her family moved for her father’s job.)

CURRENT HOME: Los Angeles

PAST CREDITS: Winstead, who says she’s been “singing and dancing since I was a toddler,” broke into the biz in junior high by landing bit parts on local productions of TV shows like “Touched by an Angel” and “Everwood.” Since then, Winstead worked her way up to leading-lady status via a solid list of B-films, including a long string of campy horror flicks such as “Black Christmas,” “Final Destination 3” and “The Ring Two.” “I’m a bit of a veteran screamer at this point,” she says.

ON “PILGRIM”: With her doe eyes and delicate bone structure, Winstead says her “anime” appearance helped her land the role in “Pilgrim.” “Even though we’re bringing this cartoon to life, [director Edgar Wright] thought it would be kind of fun getting people who have somewhat cartoonish faces involved to kind of look like the characters as they’re drawn. I never really realized I look like a cartoon character, but I suppose I do,” says the actress. “I take it as an absolute compliment.”

UP NEXT: Winstead will return to the occult in next year’s “The Thing,” a prequel to the cult Eighties flick of the same name starring Kurt Russell about an extraterrestrial parasite that comes to terrorize the people of earth. In the mostly unknown cast, Winstead plays the female lead determined to save mankind. “My part is very Sigourney Weaver in ‘Alien,’” she says.
