Mary to Star in “The Thing” Remake

February 8th, 2010

I come bearing very exciting news! Yes, this IS what I have been hinting at on Twitter since last week. Mary has been cast as the LEAD ROLE in the new remake/prequal of the Sci-Fi classic, The Thing. She heads back to Toronto next month to begin filming. Congrats Mary!

Winstead will play a Ph.D. candidate who joins a Norwegian research team in Antarctica after it discovers an alien ship in the ice. When a trapped organism is freed and begins a series of attacks, she is forced to team with a blue-collar mercenary helicopter pilot (Edgerton) to stop the rampage.

A March 15 start date in Toronto is planned.

The movie is one of two projects greenlighted by the new Universal administration. The other is “Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax,” which the studio is making with Illumination Entertainment.

The role is a coup for Winstead and marks her first starring studio vehicle. The actress, repped by CAA and Betty Winstead, appeared in a bit part in Quentin Tarantino’s “Death Proof” and was Bruce Willis’ daughter in “Live Free or Die Hard.” She caught Universal’s eye with her work opposite Michael Cera in the studio’s upcoming “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World,” where she plays love interest Ramona V. Flowers. Universal is releasing that movie Aug. 13.

Here’s a little info on her character:

[KATE LLOYD] In her late 20s to early 30s, pretty, bright-eyed, intelligent, she’s a graduate of Columbia and a Ph.D. candidate in paleontology (the study of prehistoric life). On the recommendation of her friend Adam Goodman, Kate is tapped for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity by Dr. Sander Halvorson to join his research team in Antarctica, where an extraordinary discovery has been made. Upon arrival, Kate soon finds herself at odds with Halvorson about how best to proceed with the discovery — an alien spaceship with a mysterious and sinister frozen THING found nearby — specifically whether to transfer the specimen undisturbed to a more appropriate facility for analysis, or, per Halvorson’s wishes, to drill into the specimen’s ice encasement for a definitive tissue sample. Kate’s misgivings about her involvement grow when Halvorson ignores her advice and collects his tissue sample — a critical error in judgment that ultimately frees the trapped organism and triggers a series of horrific incidents and attacks. Furthering her sense of isolation, most of the scientists at the site speak Norwegian, a language she doesn’t understand. Kate looks to her friend, Adam, for help stopping Sander’s obsession from getting them all killed, but eventually must take matters of life and death into her own hands. In the end, her only hope  of survival is to join forces with Sam Carter, the chopper pilot who flew her team to the remote Norwegian base…LEAD (2)

Mary is a Top 10 Break-out Girl!

February 2nd, 2010

Mary is amoungst Total Film’s Top 10 Break-out Girls of 2010. Check it out!

10 Mary Elizabeth Winstead

Breakout: Chances are you recognise her face, but you’re not entirely sure where from. Well, if we say “Death Proof” and “Live Free or Die Hard”, would that help?

Back in 2007, Ms Winstead was given roles by both Tarantino and Len Wiseman. She then made a harmless dance flick in ’08 (Make it Happen) before promptly vanishing into the ether.

Well, there’s nothing like a killer comeback, and Winstead’s is a doozy.

Yep, in 2010, she will be appearing in the one and only Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Based on the graphic novel ‘Scott Pilgrim’s Precious Little Life’, the film casts Winstead as Ramona Flowers.

When she becomes the object of Pilgrim’s desires, the unemployed wannabe rock star has to fight his way through seven of her evil ex-boyfriends before he can take her out on a date. It’s directed by Edgar Wright. It looks awesome.

Damaged Goods? A slew of embarrassing horrors litter her closet, including the terrible Black Christmas remake and The Ring Two.

The New: Angelina Jolie (if she kicks ass in Scott Pilgrim, which we can but hope for)

Mary is Thankfully Flawed

January 20th, 2010

Mary makes a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it appearence in Caitlin Crosby’s new video for her song Flawz. In the video, Caitlin uses fan and friend submitted photos of them holding signs, embracing their differences. I am a long time fan of Caitlin’s and I love the message she is sending. It’s nice to see Mary be a part of that. Check out LoveYourFlawz.com and CaitlinCrosby.com for more.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World gets a UK Release Date and Synopsis

December 21st, 2009

Universal Pictures announced the UK release date for Scott Pilgrim VS. The World as August 27th, 2010.

They also released this synopsis which gives us a better idea of what we can expect:

Meet charming and jobless Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera). A bass guitarist for totally average garage band Sex Bob-omb, the 22 year-old has just met the girl of his dreams… literally. The only catch to winning Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead)? Her seven evil exes are coming to kill him. Genre-smashing filmmaker Edgar Wright (Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead) tells the amazing story of one romantic slacker’s quest to power up with love in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Scott Pilgrim has never had a problem getting a girlfriend. It’s getting rid of them that proves difficult.

From the girl who kicked his heart’s ass (and now is back in town), to the teenage distraction he’s trying to shake when Ramona rollerblades into his world, love hasn’t been easy. He soon discovers, however, his new crush has the most unusual baggage of all: a nefarious league of exes controls her love life and will do whatever it takes to eliminate him as a suitor. As Scott gets closer to Ramona, he must face an increasingly vicious rogues’ gallery from her past – from infamous skateboarders to vegan rock stars and fearsomely identical twins. And if he hopes to win his true love, he must  vanquish them all before it really is game over.

They also gave us a quote:

Ramona: “Scott we don’t just have baggage, we have matching luggage”
Scott: “My baggage doesn’t try to kill me every 5 seconds”

No word on the US release yet. More info on this film whenever we get it.
