January 25th, 2012 SUNDANCE ’12: HitFix Interview & JoBlo Review

HitFix sat down with Mary to talk about how the process of filming ‘Smashed’ to the screening at the Sundance Film Festival has been one big emotional roller coaster for her.

Also JoBlo had some awesome things to say about Mary in their review of “Smashed”

If anything, it’s an absolute tour-de-force for star Mary Elizabeth Winstead, whose performance as a damaged addict struck me as being even better than Anne Hathaway’s lauded turn in the similar RACHEL GETTING MARRIED which netted her an Oscar nomination. I only know Winstead from her roles in big-budget Hollywood films like SCOTT PILGRIM and LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD, and while I’ve always liked her- I never realized just how talented she really is. This strikes me as the type of performance that could be Award-worthy if given the right kind of build-up by whichever studio picks it up.

January 24th, 2012 SUNDANCE ’12: Elle.com Interview

Elle.com caught up with Mary at Sundance and chatted with her about “Smashed,” fashion and film.

ELLE: Who are Kate and Charlie?
MEW: For a young couple they are really a lot of fun, but their whole marriage is really based around drinking. At a certain point, Kate’s life starts to spiral out of control and she decides to get sober. But Charlie is not really on board because he loves the life they have together. So the film is about them trying to make their relationship work in spite of these challenges. It’s a role that was totally challenging and terrifying to me in a lot of ways. I really wanted it

January 23rd, 2012 SUNDANCE ’12: ‘Smashed’ Premieres

“Smashed” officially premiered at the Sundance Film Festival last night and it’s already getting rave reviews. We couldn’t be more thrilled with the buzz Mary has been getting! Check out some review snippits below and all the images from last night’s premiere in our GALLERY:

From the Salt Lake Tribune:

This drama of alcoholism and its aftermath follows a long movie tradition – “The Lost Weekend,” “Days of Wine and Roses,” “Clean and Sober,” etc. – and brings a fresh, vibrant approach to it. Kate Hannah (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and her husband Charlie (Aaron Paul) are good-time drinkers, but Kate’s alcohol-fueled behavior starts getting scary. When she throws up in front of the first-grade class she teaches, her school’s vice-principal (Nick Offerman) suggests she try AA. Soon she’s taking the first steps toward sobriety, which leads to conflict with the still-drinking Charlie. The script, by director James Ponsoldt and co-writer Susan Burke (based on her own experiences with sobriety), is a firm launching pad for strong, authentic performances by Paul, Offerman, Megan Mullally (as Kate’s school principal) and Octavia Spencer (as Kate’s AA sponsor). But Winstead particularly shines, finding both laughter and tears in Kate’s rocky road to sobriety. *** ½ (three and a half stars)

From Screen Daily:

The best aspect of Smashed is its low-key, non-judgemental treatment of alcoholism, which allows the audience to initially find the couple’s drunken exploits charming before eventually showing the real danger they’re bringing to themselves. Refusing to cast either character as the villain, Ponsoldt – whose first film, Off The Black, also dealt with an alcoholic – is just as concerned with Kate’s difficult path to sobriety as it is with their relationship.

In understated but resonant ways, Smashed illustrates just how much their marriage is connected to their drinking – and how Kate’s desire to change puts a potentially irreparable strain on their bond.

Winstead and Paul are intensely empathetic as the tight-knit couple, and they succeed in showing the highs and lows of drinking without falling back on showy technique or melodramatic grandstanding. But there’s also good work from a supporting ensemble that includes Nick Offerman as Kate’s co-worker and fellow alcoholic, Megan Mullally as her boss, and Octavia Spencer as her AA sponsor.
